THE TWIN LAKES AREA OF ARKANSAS

Mountain Home sits between two huge pristine clean and clear lakes, Lake Norfork and Bull Shoals Lake, and is near three of the cleanest and most scenic rivers in the United States, if not the world. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission have been preserving them for the past 30 years. Just 10 miles west of Mountain Home is Cotter, which sits at the edge of the White River and is known as the “Trout Fishing Capital of the World”.

The Rivers:

The White River:
The White River has its crystal clear water, beautiful scenery and world record rainbow and brown trout catches! Fly fishermen come from across the U.S. and the world to fish the cold water of the river, which is created when water is released from beneath Bull Shoals Dam. It’s an angler’s dream! There are full service trout docks, boat launching ramps, campgrounds and outfitters who offer “float trips” for trout fishing – which is an Ozark/White River, experience of a lifetime.

The North Fork River:
The cold water of the North Fork River – located downstream of Norfork Dam – creates a world-class trout steam that also attracts anglers from across the country for fishing tournaments. The White River and North Fork River routinely produce record setting catches in the 10 to 20 pound range and some in excess of that. It provides an excellent location to introduce youngsters to fishing – almost everyone who comes to fish the White and North Fork Rivers will catch trout. There are several full service docks, boat launching ramps, campgrounds and picnic areas along the river.

Buffalo National River:
The Buffalo River originates in the wild and rugged Boston Mountains of Arkansas and is approximately 150 miles long, with breath-taking scenery that includes caves, waterfalls and some of the most majestic bluff outcropping you will ever see. This area lends itself to fishing, boat and float trips, camping and hiking.

The Lakes:

Lake Norfork in Summer  lake in winter

These two huge lakes have a combined shore line of almost 1,600 miles and have about 100,000 acres of surface water to fish, boat and play on! The Arkansas Game & Fish Commission have been stocking the lakes for more than 30 years. The Norfork National Fish Hatchery, located near the foot of Norfork Dam, ensures the year round stocking of fish that attracts fishermen from around the United States and other countries.

Lake Norfork:
This huge and beautiful blue lake was created by the Norfork Dam, built on the Norfork River between1941-1943. The dam is 217 feet high 3,624 feet long. It took 1 and ½ million cubic yards of concrete to complete and has 12 40 x 28 spillway gates and 11 4 x 6 outlet conduits. During flood control conditions, the lake has a surface area of about 71,000 acres and more than 45,000 acres at the top of the conservation pool. There are marina operations that can provide boat and motor rentals, fuel and other supplies and services you may need.

Bull Shoals Lake:
This massive and beautiful lake was the result of Bull Shoals Dam being built on the White River just 7 miles north of Cotter in 1947-1951 and it is 256 feet high, 2236 feet long with 17 40 x 29 foot spillway outlets and 16 4 x 9 conduits. Fishing on the lake or in the White River below, have given up record setting catches. Night fishing is also popular and yield crappie, trout and white bass. The Corps of Engineers manages 17 parks on Bull Shoals Lake. There are marinas that can provide the necessary services and supplies for your visit. Most parks provide camping and picnic areas and many have RV hookups and electricity. There are boat launching ramps and nature trails for hikers.
